Fairfield County Man Charged After Standoff With Police While Firing Shots From Window

A Fairfield County man was arrested following a standoff with police after he allegedly fired numerous shots from the third-floor window of a multi-family home.

The incident began in Bridgeport in the 100 block of Orange Street around 4:30 a.m., Tuesday, May 24.

Bridgeport Police responded to a home after receiving calls reporting shots being fired on Orange Street, Capt. Kevin Gilleran said, of the Bridgeport Police.

Officers arrived at the scene and reported hearing more gunshots. Police identified a multi-family home on Orange Street from which the shots were being fired, Gilleran said.

Innocent citizens were evacuated and the Bridgeport Police Emergency Services Unit was activated.

Patrol supervisors established communication with the suspect, identified as Daniel Rivera, age 45, of Bridgeport, as trained police crisis negotiators were requested and began their response to the scene, the captain added.

Rivera surrendered to officers around 5:50 a.m. and was transported to an area hospital for evaluation.

The home was swept by officers for any possible victims and/or additional dangerous subjects. None were located.

Two 12 gauge shotguns and a 9mm semi-automatic handgun were located at the scene and turned in as evidence, Gilleran said. 

Rivera, a convicted felon, was released from the hospital and transported to the Bridgeport Police Department where he was charged with:

  • Two counts of criminal possession of a firearm
  • Unlawful discharge of a firearm
  • Three counts of threatening 
  • Criminal mischief
  • Three counts of reckless endangerment
  • Breach of peace
  • Two counts of unlawful restraint
  • Two counts of risk of injury to a minor.

Bond was set at $150,000 and Rivera is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday, May 25.
